A refinery unit turnaround had a fixed start date and a fixed end date. Twenty-eight control valves were scheduled for replacement inside that window, and a valve arriving late is not a delayed delivery — it is a delayed restart, measured in lost production per day.
Scope of supply
- Globe, ball and butterfly control valves sized to the process data sheets
- Pneumatic actuators with positioners, configured before shipment
- Hazardous area certification where the service required it
- Material certificates and pressure test records with each item
- Tagging and packing by unit area, in installation sequence
The constraint
Turnaround procurement fails in the detail, not in the headline. A valve correct in every respect except its face-to-face dimension is an unusable valve. A positioner shipped unconfigured costs commissioning hours the schedule has not allowed for.
How it was handled
Each item was checked against its data sheet before order placement, not after arrival — dimensions, trim, actuator sizing, failure action. Shipments were consolidated and tagged by unit area so that the site received valves in the order they would be installed, rather than a single pallet to be sorted under time pressure.
Outcome
All twenty-eight valves arrived inside the window, with documentation complete at the point of delivery. No item was returned for specification error.
